Compassion Fatigue – Practices for Work and Home

Given the unique, demanding, and stressful positions many professionals have managed in this past year and a half, extremely high levels of stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout are being widely experienced. Many frontline professionals that have had immediate contact with the public are experiencing not only their own stress but are increasingly burdened by the suffering and challenges of others, even blaming themselves for not being able to do more to help, or not being able to put it all out of their mind after work. Some of the compassion fatigue signs people are experiencing include insomnia, loss of pleasure and motivation, a sense of overwhelm, frequent complaining about their work or their life, a sense of hopelessness, and general fatigue. 

The tools in this session can help turn this around. In this training, Robin Rose brings both an understanding of the three types of stress that drain us: Distress, Burnout, and Compassion Fatigue, and the one that increases our energy in a needed way: Eustress. Participants will have an opportunity to identify how each appears to them and then learn easy, effective, and practical ways that provide immediate and positive shifts, as well as strategies to deepen personal reserves and increase resilience. Learn and practice what to do when uncomfortable emotions arise, or you cannot stop thinking about someone who is suffering. Learn what stops stress immediately and what practices increase our stress tolerance. Gain skills to release accumulated toxic stress and other precursors that can foster compassion fatigue. Find out which situations trigger your higher levels of stress and what to do when you recognize this. Finally, each participant can select a handful of practices and strategies that will fit in lifestyle as a starting point to begin their stress reduction practice. The goal: ease your stress levels and help you approach your important work with greater energy and balance. Come to understand, apply and/or practice: 

  • Learn what stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue are

  • How unresolved stress affects us physically, emotionally, mentally, and in our relationships

  • Assess your personal stress levels and your unique stress indicators

  • Learn multiple ways to both prevent and reduce each

  • Learn a specific skillset to use your stress to strengthen your resilience

  • Deal with tough moments well & then let them go, and ID when you cannot

  • Recognize the signs that you need to ‘debrief’ and learn how to, in healthy ways

  • Identify your best transition skills so you can head home after work without the baggage

Finally - identify the strategies that will fit for you and develop a personal plan to incorporate them into your daily and weekly schedule
